Amen Break is the name of is a drum break that has been widely sampled and has become the stable of drum and bass and jungle music. In this broadsheet newspaper-style project, Prior turns his camera into a time when New York finally went to sleep: 2020. So, Prior's distinctive documentary style took him around the streets of a city that never looked so still and quiet before, observing the uncanny lack of the normal 'hustle and bustle'. This way, Amen Breaks takes us into a New York that looks different without the usual noises, the people and the action. However, we get to witness the events that still went on during a very different year. Furthermore, the uncertainty, the isolation and the tension are visible in Amen Break. Alongside the quietness we observe the effects of a devastating pandemic, the tensions between mask-wearers and anti-maskers, the power of thousands of voices shouting 'Black Lives Matter' on the streets. So, Amen Break has a rhythm and a narrative that are hard to forget. Once again Prior invites the viewer to consider each individual event whilst at the same time, weaving a cohesive reality with each image.
